Cloud optimization services provider Akamai Technologies recently announced the launch of its Electronic Software Delivery for Gaming, a solution designed to enhance both consumers and publishers of online games.
According to Akamai, its Electronic Software Delivery for Gaming package utilizes its cloud-based network to "enhance a consumer's game download experience and increase download completion rates for game publishers."
Designed for "try-before-you-buy" and massively multiplayer online games, Akamai said its solutions will improve download completion rates and reduce download abandonment. As a result, the company said, gaming publishers will be able to convert website visitors into paying customers.
"The internet has transformed the gaming industry and presented new opportunities for game distribution and monetization," said Akamai's Reynold Harbini. "Online and digitally distributed games have advantages over the traditional software-in-a-box retail model, including more efficient game distribution, global reach, more social gaming experiences and the opportunity for innovative, new business models."
In addition to the online gaming industry, Akamai is also increasing its presence in the mobile networks market. Early this month, the company announced it would integrate its technology in Ericsson's network equipment.
